Painted by local street artists, these masterpieces have become part of the urban fabric, forming artistic landmarks throughout the city. Από όποιο σημείο της Αθήνας κι αν την κοιτάξεις, η Ακρόπολη θα σου «κλέψει» την προσοχή. Και έχει πολύ καλό λόγο να το κάνει αφού, όπως και πριν 2.500 χρόνια συνεχίζει να είναι «μάρτυρας» μιας πόλης που αλλάζει συνεχώς, κουβαλώντας το όνομα του πιο διάσημου ναού της.

Έχει υπάρξει φυσικό φρούριο για τους πρώτους κατοίκους της πόλης, μέρος λατρείας των αρχαίων θεών και κέντρο του θαυμαστού έργου αναδόμησης της πόλης του Περικλή τον «χρυσό» 5ο αιώνα π.Χ. Η Ακρόπολη έχει βιώσει τα πάντα. Πολιτισμοί και κατακτητές έχουν έρθει και έχουν φύγει (μερικοί προσέθεσαν στοιχεία, μερικοί κατέστρεψαν κομμάτια της) αλλά ο ιερός βράχος στέκεται ακόμα όρθιος με όψη υπερήφανη και επιμονή στον χρόνο!

Από το 1987 αποτελεί Μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO και εδώ και μερικές χιλιάδες χρόνια είναι ένα μοναδικό σύμβολο του πνεύματος, της τόλμης και του πολιτισμού που χάρισαν οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες στην ανθρωπότητα.

Εξερευνώντας την, ανακαλύπτεις ένα αριστούργημα αρχαίας αρχιτεκτονικής και τέχνης. Αυτό που θαυμάζουμε σήμερα – παρέα με τα εκθέματα που φιλοξενούνται στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης – είναι δουλειά των σπουδαιότερων τεχνιτών και μηχανικών της εποχής: Ο Παρθενώνας (σίγουρα το πιο διάσημο ελληνικό κτίσμα παγκοσμίως) αφιερωμένος στη θεά Αθηνά, το Ερεχθείο με τις δεσπόζουσες Καρυάτιδες να στηρίζουν στα κεφάλια τους την οροφή της βεράντας του ναού, ο Ναός της Αθηνάς Νίκης… Όλα τους, εκπληκτικά επιτεύγματα της φιλοδοξίας των αρχαίων Ελλήνων.

Είναι σχεδόν αδύνατο να εκτιμήσει πλήρως κανείς το μεγαλείο της περιοχής απλά περπατώντας. Σου συστήνουμε ανεπιφύλακτα, λοιπόν, να κάνεις την περιήγηση με κάποιον ξεναγό – αρχαιολόγο ή να αγοράσεις έναν πολύ καλό ταξιδιωτικό οδηγό. Παρακάτω, θα σου παρουσιάσουμε κάποια βασικά σημεία της Ακρόπολης αλλά στ’ αλήθεια… Αυτή είναι μόνο η αρχή.

Ο ναός του Ποσειδώνα στο Σούνιο είχε πάντα ξεχωριστή θέση στην καρδιά των επισκεπτών της Αθήνας. Χτισμένος την ίδια εποχή με τον Παρθενώνα, στη διάρκεια του Χρυσού Αιώνα του Περικλή, δεν ήταν απλώς ένας τόπος λατρείας του θεού της θάλασσας (στο εσωτερικό του ναού, ακριβώς στο κέντρο, δέσποζε επιβλητικό άγαλμα του Ποσειδώνα με ύψος περισσότερο από 6 μέτρα). Η περίοπτη θέση του πάνω από τη θάλασσα στο νοτιοανατολικό άκρο της Αττικής έκανε το ναό για τους ναυτικούς σημάδι ότι βρίσκονταν κοντά στον Πειραιά.

Λιγότερο από μια ώρα μακριά από την Αθήνα (με αυτοκίνητο), ο ναός του Ποσειδώνα, συνεχίζει μέχρι σήμερα να είναι πόλος έλξης για τους επισκέπτες, που εκτός από τον αρχαιολογικό χώρο απολαμβάνουν την κοντινή παραλία. Αλήθεια, που αλλού μπορείς να κολυμπήσεις σε πεντακάθαρα νερά με θέα τους μαρμάρινους κίονες ενός αρχαιοελληνικού ναού; 

Θα έχεις γνωρίσει ήδη την Αθηναϊκή Ριβιέρα με τις παραλίες, τα μπαρ και τα εστιατόριά της. Α, και κάτι που μπορεί να μην ξέρεις… Ανάμεσα στους γοητευμένους επισκέπτες του ναού του Ποσειδώνα υπάρχουν και πολλοί επώνυμοι. Ένας από αυτούς, ο Βρετανός ποιητής και φιλέλληνας, Λόρδος Βύρωνας (19ος αιώνας), ένιωσε μάλιστα τόσο μαγεμένος, που χάραξε το όνομά του σε μια από τις πέτρες του ναού.

A natural hilltop fortress for the city of Athens’ first inhabitants, a place for worshipping the ancient gods, the centrepiece of the glorious 5th century BC reconstruction project of Pericles as Athens enjoyed its Golden Age… whichever era of Athens’ history you focus on, this was the city’s undisputed focal point. Civilisations and conquerors have come and gone, sometimes adding to what Athenians today call the Sacred Rock and sometimes destroying its monuments. And there it still stands, shining as brightly as ever.

It’s not surprising that the most famous acropolis in Greece has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is an enduring symbol of the culture that Greek antiquity gave to the world. But from up close, you’ll also see that it is a masterpiece of architecture and artistry. Are you ready for a closer look?

The Temple of Poseidon in Sounion has always had a special place in the hearts of visitors. Built at the same time as the Parthenon, during Athens’ Golden Age, it wasn’t just a site of worship of the sea god Poseidon (whose bronze statue stood more than 6m tall at its centre) but – positioned high above the sea on the southeastern tip of Attica – it was an indication for sailors returning to Piraeus that they were almost home.

Less than an hour’s drive from Athens, the Temple of Poseidon continues to enthral visitors today who can combine a visit the archaeological site with time at the nearby beach. Where else can you swim in beautifully clear water and gaze up at the marble-white columns of a 5th-century BC temple?

Naturally, you’ll have been tempted by the beaches, bars and restaurants along the Athens Riviera as you make the short drive from the city centre, but Sounio beach – with its views into the Saronic Gulf – feels like it should be on the island.

The highlight, of course, is feeling the aura of the temple. On a clear day, you can make out the islands of Kea, Kythnos and even Serifos to the southeast and Aegina to the west.

It was all too much for the 19th-century British poet and philhellene Lord Byron, who felt compelled to scratch his name in one of the rocks of the temple. And at the end of the day, you’ll be treated to one of the most magical sunsets of your life.
